#1164 Global Leader? Ten Word Wiki, Coffee Cup Robbery, Rubber, Valentine's Day

Show 1164 Wednesday 10 February
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi I'm Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s mistake comes from an advertisement that someone saw … in Auckland, I think.
I got the photo off this blog.

The ad says that this company is “a truely global services leader”.

Can you spot the mistake?

There shouldn’t be an e in truly.

True has an e, but truly has no e.

The site I recommend today is called: Ten Word Wiki.

As they say on their front page: Ten Word Wiki is an encyclopedia for the ADD generation.

Everything is described in ten words and, like Wikipedia, anyone can edit it.

Here are a few examples:

YouTube: Google Owned video sharing website. Home of a thousand cats

idea: Sudden creativity or solution. Never when needed. Always when busy.

I love the entry for broccoli: It makes you feel like a giant eating some trees.

And the one for Lance Armstrong’s pretty good too: Inspirational unitesticled cycling legend. Single-handedly invented the rubber wristband industry.

I wrote an entry for thedailyenglishshow – but it’s pretty lame and I wrote it myself so please go and change it if you can think of something better.

STICK NEWS

Reuters reported a man in Germany ordered a cup of coffee at an amusement arcade.
Then, brandishing the steaming cup, he forced the attendant to open the till and fled with cash.
A police spokesperson said “he wasn't going to pour coffee over her, he was going to hit her with the cup".

And that was Stick News for Wednesday the 10th of February.
Kia ora.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is rubber.

Rubber is a substance which is used for making things like tyres.

I saw a poster in Auckland the other day which was advertising condoms.
It said: Kiwi rubber essentials.
On the poster there are some gumboots and some jandals which both can be made of rubber.
And some condoms … because rubber is an informal word for condom.

conversations with sarah
#738 Do you think it’s stupid?

Step 1: Read Nancy's lines.
Step 2: Repeat Nancy's lines and talk to Sarah.

Nancy What’s Valentine’s Day like in NZ?

Sarah Ah, well it’s not like in Japan, that’s for sure. Um, it’s pretty much the same as in the US, I think.

Nancy Do most people celebrate it?

Sarah No, not most people. Some people might go out for dinner or eat chocolate or something. And other people just spend the week moaning about how stupid Valentines Day is.

Nancy Do you think it’s stupid?

Sarah Well, I love chocolate, so any day that involves chocolate is good by me.
