#1137 New Year Holiday On Aotea / Great Barrier Island Part 4

xShow 1137 Thursday 14 January
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

The day before we left Great Barrier Island, we went to the opening of an art exhibition.

They held a welcoming ceremony called a pōwhiri.

Haere mai! Haere mai! Haere mai! (Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!)
Karanga mai rā! Karanga mai rā! Karanga mai rā! (Call us! Call us! Call us!)

We're not going to say too many words.
We're going to sing a waiata and we're going to have a karakia on the food.

Purea nei e te hau (scattered by the wind)
Horoia e te ua (washed by the rain)
Whitiwhitia e te ra (transformed by the sun)
Mahea ake nga poraruraru (swept away are all anxieties)

There was some delicious fruit.
And I loved some of the artwork.

The next day, sadly, it was time to leave the beautiful island.

We caught the 1 o'clock ferry back to Auckland.
On the boat we watched a couple of movies - The Proposal and The Hangover.

Towards the end of the journey, we went up to the top to have a look at the view.

I looked at a map and tried to figure out where we were.

So we could be around here, or maybe around here.

I couldn't quite work it out so I asked one of the crew members.

This, there ... so we just came through here.

I really loved Peter Williams' paintings and sculpture that I saw at the exhibition.
This is his site.
I love this painting on his site.

The painting of the people dancing - another one of my favourites at the exhibition - was by Fenella Christian.
