#1269 The Switch, NZ Wins 90-year Apple War, Bouts Of Hypochondria

Show 1269 Tuesday 10 August
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s movie is called The Switch.
This is one of those movies that pretty much tells you the whole story in the trailer. So you don’t really have to watch the movie, you can just enjoy the trailer like a short film.

It’s a romantic comedy about a woman called Kassie who has a baby using a sperm donor. And her best friend, Wally, gets really drunk one night and swaps the donor’s sperm with his own sperm. But he doesn’t remember this, and seven years later he finds out …and you can imagine what happens at the end.

At one point in the trailer, Kassie and Wally are on the phone and I think Wally’s trying to tell Kassie that she shouldn’t be with the guy that she’s seeing.

He says: I think that this guy is a mistake.
And she says: Would you please not Wally this into a situation.
And he says: Hang on, did you just use my name as a verb?
She says: Yeah, I did.

Wally is very neurotic, which means: abnormally sensitive and obsessive.

So he probably often gets unnecessarily worried about things and so she has made his name into a verb. To wally something into a situation means, I guess, to make something into a big deal when it isn’t.

STICK NEWS

Since 1919, New Zealand apples have been banned from Australia.
Australia says the ban is to protect their apples from a disease called fireblight.
But New Zealand says the ban was imposed to protect local growers.
So New Zealand complained to the World Trade Organisation.
And the organization has just issued a decision ruling against Australia banning Kiwi apples.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 10th of August.
Kia ora.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is hypochondria.

a state in which sb worries all the time about their health and believes that they are ill when there is nothing wrong with them

In today’s movie Wally is talking to his son and he says: I have had my bouts of hypochondria.

A bout is a period of illness. And his son doesn’t know what hypochondria is so he asks: What’s that?

And his dad explains that it is: Thinking that you have diseases that you don’t really have.
