#1259 Ōtara Markets, Auckland, New Zealand - 24 July 2010 - Life In A Day

Show 1259 Saturday 31 July
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

On Saturday the 24th of July, I filmed my day for YouTube’s Life In A Day project.

I went to the Ōtara markets and bought some fruit and vegetables.
Apples, carrots, kūmara, parsley, parsnip, yams, taro, daikon, puha, beetroot, broccoli, cauliflower, bananas.

I also bought some carrot juice and some bread.

I went inside a building and saw some people playing volleyball.
Next door they were building something.

I walked around the Ōtara shops for a bit.
I saw a few dresses I liked, but I couldn’t be bothered trying them on.
I went to the art gallery.

Then I went to Manukau to have some lunch.

#1258 Double Rainbow, It’s Full On, Tokyo’s Oldest Man Died 30 Years Ago

Show 1258 Friday 30 July
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show. Today’s song is called Auto Tune The Rainbow.

Have you heard about the Double Rainbow meme?

Basically a guy in America filmed a double rainbow and his reaction to seeing this double rainbow, which was a very extreme reaction. He was very excited and overjoyed to see this double rainbow.

He uploaded that video in January. And six months later it suddenly became very popular thanks to an American TV show host and comedian called Jimmy Kimmel. Jimmy Kimmel tweeted about the video and linked to it, and then it just exploded … and now the original video has millions of hits and there are lots of remixes.

And the remix I really like is called: Auto Tune The Rainbow.

It’s very easy to understand.

Here are most of the lines:

Double rainbow.
Oh my god!
What does this mean?
Oh my god, it's full on.
Double rainbow across the sky.

Double Rainbow - ORIGINAL:

STICK NEWS

Sogen Kato was born on the 22nd of July 1899 and was listed as the oldest man in Tokyo.
Apparently city officials were updating their lists of centenarians ahead of Respect for the Elderly Day in September, and wanted to meet him.
But his family members repeatedly chased them away, saying Kato was well but didn't want to see anyone.
Officials grew suspicious and asked police to investigate. Police forced their way into the house and discovered he’d been dead for around 30 years but his mummified body was still lying in bed wearing pajamas.

And that was Stick News for Friday the 30th of July.
Kia ora.

I wonder what his secret is...
Probably healthy food.

He could be the guest of honour!
Great idea!
clap! clap!

He's um... busy... watching TV and... um...

I'm ready boss!
Dude... the guy's a hundred and eleven.

Grandpa's dead? Really?!
How did you pay for that bag?

Word of the Day

Today’s word is full on.

This is a line from today’s song: Oh my god, it's full on.

Full on is an informal word which means intense.

So the double rainbow guy says that the double rainbow is full on, because he thinks it’s amazing and wonderful and intense and he’s really moved by it.

Here are some other ways you could use the expression full on.

If two people in your office had a big argument and it was really intense and weird and uncomfortable and you were telling someone about it afterwards, you could say: It was pretty full on!

Or if someone’s making conversation and they ask you, “How’s work going?” Or, “How’s school going?” And you have a lot of work on at the moment and you’re quite busy and a bit stressed, you could say: Ah, it’s pretty full on at the moment actually. Yeah, I’m really looking forward to the holidays.

#1257 How Māui Slowed The Sun, Fat Vs Obese, Ostentatious Coffee, Fave OF Character

Show 1257 Thursday 29 July
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

It’s Māori Language Week in New Zealand this week.

So today we’re studying a video in Māori with English subtitles.

It’s a video of a story called: How Māui slowed the Sun.

This video’s based on a book that I had when I was a child. So it really brings back memories for me. And I really like these illustrations.

The story’s a New Zealand legend and I think it’s also told in other Polynesian countries too. Basically the sun was moving across the sky too fast, so a guy called Māui decided he’d try to slow it down.

This is a story that a lot of kids in New Zealand know and they read it at school, so you can see on YouTube there are a lot of videos of the story made by kids. They’re animations or acted out. Some of them are pretty cute.

Today’s question answer will test you on the story, so you might want to go and watch the video before you try and answer the questions.

Also today, we are introducing a new segment on the show. It’s called question time.

For question time this week we asked people about Outrageous Fortune. Outrageous Fortune’s a New Zealand TV show and I was surprised to find that not everyone is as obsessed with it as I am.

STICK NEWS

Anne Milton is a member of the conservative party of the United Kingdom. She’s currently the public health minister.
According to news reports she said doctors and other health professionals should tell people they are fat rather than obese.
She says people should take personal responsibility for their lifestyles and using the word fat could encourage people to lose weight.

And that was Stick News for Thursday the 29th of July.
Kia ora.

1257 a
Look at these stats... there are too many fat people in Britatin!
Gasp! You said the F word!

1257 b
According to these test results... you're fat.
! Really?! gasp!

1257 c
The government is calling on all lardarses in Britain to refrain from scoffing pies.
That might be a bit much...

Word of the Day

Today’s word is ostentation.

The other day I bought some coffee for the first time from this company called Karajoz - if that’s how you say it - and on the back of the packet it says the nose knows, which is quite cute. And it also says the coffee is 100% free of ostentation.

So what is ostentation? Is it a dangerous chemical or something? Actually, no. They’re just trying to be clever.

Ostentation means: an exaggerated display of wealth, knowledge or skill that is made in order to impress people.

So I think they mean something like: this coffee isn’t just trying to show off and impress people … it genuinely is good coffee.

question time

Papakura, Auckland, New Zealand

Welcome to the first question time on The Daily English Show.
For question time today talked to people in Papakura in Auckland.
We asked them: What’s your favourite character on Outrageous Fortune?

Probably Van.
Why?
‘Cos he’s the craziest. And he always does silly stuff and makes you laugh.

Ah, I don’t really watch it, so I wouldn’t really know. But Pascalle, she’s pretty cool.
She’s different and kind of out there and stuff, so, yeah.

Um, oh, I don’t really watch it. But, I don’t know, it’s probably that, ah, that main guy that got in jail.

What was her name? Rebecca, eh?
Cheryl.
Cheryl, yeah.
What do you like about her?
Oh, she’s a good actor.

I quite like Grandpa. (?)
Why do you like him?
Cos he’s pretty rough.
Cool.
And he’s a bit of a sexual deviant.
That he is.
And I like his tracksuit.

Cheryl’s my favourite.
Yeah? What do you like about her?
I don’t know. She’s like funny and, like, she doesn’t care what anyone thinks about her, so, yeah, she’s pretty cool.

Sarah The story’s much more violent than I remembered it.

Robert How is it violent?

Sarah He beats the sun up.

Robert Yeah, but the sun deserved it. He was moving too fast.

Sarah Nobody deserves to be beaten!

Robert What would you have done?

Sarah I would’ve scheduled a meeting with the sun and, ah, tried to negotiate a solution that suited everybody.

Robert What if the sun didn’t want to come to the meeting?

Sarah Hmmm … well …

#1256 Common Mistakes, Tatoeba.org, Talking Fish, On About, Telephone High 5

how 1256 Wednesday 28 July
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

The other day I came across an interesting list:

This is a list of common spelling mistakes that native English speakers make.

1. accept / except
2. advice / advise
3. all right / alright
4. effect / affect
5. every day / everyday
6. its / it’s
7. passed / past
8. quiet / quite
9. then / than
10. who’s / whose

Every day is a common one and that’s one of my personal pet peeves. You might have heard me talk about it before.

The only one that I don’t really agree with is alright / all right.

Alright is an informal way of writing all right. But I wouldn’t say it’s wrong. And, in fact, I think I prefer it as one word and I think it’s definitely fine for most informal blogs.

But, still it is important to remember that alright is the informal or non-standard version, so if you’re doing some formal writing, then you’d better write all right as two words.

The other day someone told me about a site called Tatoeba.
It’s basically a multilingual dictionary of sentences.

You can search certain words, and it will give you example sentences using that word.
For example, I put from English to Japanese, and typed in pumpkin.

And the example sentence it gave me was: What a big pumpkin!

And then I clicked on that sentence and I found it in three other languages too.

So if there’s a word you’re trying to learn and you’re struggling to understand how to use it, then you could try putting that in, and seeing what it comes up with.

And if you’re interested you can register on the site and you can contribute to the project by doing things like adding some translations.

STICK NEWS

According to news reports a University of Auckland marine scientist has discovered that fish can “talk”.
He says they communicate with noises including grunts, chirps and pops.
Apparently, fish communicate with each other for different reasons, including attracting mates, scaring off predators and orienting themselves.

And that was Stick News for Wednesday the 28th of July.
Kia ora.

1256 a
Hello!
Hello!

1256 b
And the fish said, "Pop, pop grunt!"
Was that before or after the special cookie?

1256 c
Did it hurt?
What?
When you fell from heaven?

1256 d
Bugger off!

1256 e
Where am I?

Word of the Day

Today’s word is on.

For such a small word, on has quite a lot of meanings, and quite a few idioms and phrasal verbs too.

One idiom using on is: to be on about sth.

It’s an informal idiom which means: to talk about something, or to mean something.

Last Monday I asked people if they had any radio shows or podcasts they recommended. And mothersuperior85 recommended Scott Mills Daily. So I subscribed to it in iTunes and I’ve been listening to it. I’ve listened to about 6 or 7 shows so far … and it’s pretty funny.

One of the segments on his show is called: What are those kids and old people on about?

And on the shows I listened to they played some audio of a young boy describing something, and the guests, the people who were playing the game, had to guess what he was talking about.
So: What’s he on about? means: What’s he talking about?

Sarah You know what a high five is, eh?

Sarah Well, on that show that I listened to, Scott Mills Daily, they do high fives on the phone.

Mari How do they do that? Do they slap the phone?

Sarah No. They push the 5 button. The announcer, Scott Mills, says to the guests at the end of the conversation, high 5, and they push the button.

Mari Is that common in New Zealand?

Sarah Oh this is a British show. But … no, I’ve never heard of that before. I think it’s something that he made up.

#1255 Inception, Strictly Speaking, Naked Cowboy Vs Naked Cowgirl, Out

Show 1255 Tuesday 27 July
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a movie that everyone seems to be talking about. It’s called Inception.
The world premiere was in London on the 13th of July.

It’s an American science fiction action film which was written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan.

Some people seem to be a bit confused by the plot, so it’s the kind of movie that I’d probably recommend watching in your native language first, and then watching it again in English, once you understand the plot.

The move is about dreams. It’s about a guy who “enters the dreams of others to obtain information that is otherwise inaccessible.”

In the trailer, the main character explains what he does like this: We create the world of the dream. We bring the subject into that dream and they fill it with their secrets.

Then a girl says to him: Then you break in and steal it?

And he says: Well, it’s not, strictly speaking, legal.

Strictly speaking is an idiom which means: if you are using words or rules in their exact or correct sense.

And one of the examples here is: Strictly speaking, the book is not a novel, but a short story.

And with the law, when something’s not clear, when there’s a grey area, you might use the expression strictly speaking.

You might say something like: Strictly speaking it’s not 100% legal, but it’s a grey area.

STICK NEWS

Kia ora in Stick News today the Naked Cowboy is suing the Naked Cowgirl.

The Naked Cowboy is a famous American busker who performs in Times Square in New York City.
The Naked Cowboy has trademarked his character.
People who want to become a naked cowboy or cowgirl have to get permission and pay the original Naked Cowboy franchise fees.
He’s now suing a woman who has been performing as The Naked Cowgirl for the last two years without paying fees.
The Naked Cowboy’s lawyer says the woman is confusing tourists and destroying the brand.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 27th of July.
Kia ora.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is inception.

inception noun (formal) the start of an institution, an organization, etc.

For example: The club has grown rapidly since its inception in 1990.

But in the movie, inception means the start of something, but not an organization. It means: to plant an idea in a target's subconscious.
