#1023 Perfect Day, 1 Million Yen For Osaka, Reap What You Sow

Show 1023 Friday 10 April
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a song called Perfect Day. It’s by Lou Reed and it came out in 1972.

It sounds like a simple, slow song about having a great day drinking in the park and going to a movie in the evening.

It's such a perfect day
I'm glad I spent it with you

As it says in Wikipedia: the song's lyrics are often considered to suggest simple, conventional romantic devotion.

And it could be about drug addiction. If you read the lyrics as a song about drugs, then he’s saying that it’s a “perfect day” because he’s taking heroin.

The line: You just keep me hanging on, could be talking about his addiction. The drug makes him feel so good that he wants to keep taking it.

Also these lines could also be about how he feels when he takes heroin:

You made me forget myself
I thought I was someone else

Someone good

Reading some comments online it seems that some people think this is just a beautiful happy song. But I agree with the people who think it’s quite depressing and it’s about how heroin helps him forget the troubles in his life … but he knows it’s only temporary and eventually it will catch up with him.

As someone wrote on the site Song Meanings: the lyrics seem to imply that he feels worthless, and can only experience happiness through temporary escapes.

STICK NEWS

Kia ora in Stick News today a woman gave a hundred million yen in cash to the governor of Osaka, Japan.

Apparently Osaka prefecture isn’t doing so well financially. Last month an elderly woman decided she wanted to help out. She said she was a fan of the governor and wanted to support him. So she walked to the governor’s office with a backpack full of cash – one hundred million yen. She gave the governor the money, then they took a photo together and had a 20-minute chat. The governor said he was surprised and grateful and promised to make sure the donation was put to good use.

And that was Stick News for Friday the 10th of April.
Kia ora.

TDES Niseko Snow Report
in Niseko Annupuri

This is the lift which goes up to the top of the Annupuri ski field. It’s called Jumbo Number 4.
And this is the view from the top. So beautiful.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is reap.

To sow means to plant an area with seed.
And to reap means to harvest the crop.

So you reap what you sow is literally true, because whatever seeds you plant will be what grows.
But it’s actually an idiom which means that you have to deal with the bad effects or results of something which you originally started.

At the end of the song, Lou Reed sings: You're going to reap just what you sow.

So it sounds like he’s saying that he knows that he will eventually have to deal with the bad effects of taking heroin.

friday joke

Why didn't the skeleton cross the road?
Because it didn't have any guts.

conversations with sarah
#646 He’s still alive

Step 1: Repeat Tim’s lines.
Step 2: Read Tim’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Tim Lou Reed died of a heroin overdose, didn’t he?

Sarah No, he’s still alive.

Tim Oh, is he?

Sarah Yeah.

Tim Oh, I must have been thinking of someone else.

Sarah Yeah, some musicians have died after taking heroin, like Jim Morrison and Sid Vicious.

Tim I’m sure I heard something about Lou Reed overdosing.

Sarah Oh, yeah, I think there was a hoax about that a while ago.
