Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a scene from a movie called The Little Princess which came out in 1939.

EDIT (June 2010) - This video isn't working. You can watch the movie here.

Shirley Temple is in this movie. Have you heard of her?

Wikipedia says she: is best known for being an iconic American child actress of the 1930s.
And she’s still alive and she’s now 81 apparently.

There’s also a non-alcoholic cocktail called a Shirley Temple, which is named after her.

Anyway, in this movie, Shirley Temple plays a young girl who goes to live at a boarding school and the boss of this boarding school, the headmistress, is really mean and selfish. Her name is Miss Minchin. And today’s conversation is between two people that work for Miss Minchin and who are lovers. Their names are Goeffrey and Rose. And they’re talking about a problem that they have. They used to meet each other on Thursday afternoons, but Miss Minchin has said that now Rose can’t have Thursday afternoons off.

I think this conversation has a good example of how to use must.

Must is used to express an opinion about something that is likely.
So if you go to meet somebody at the airport and they’ve just got off a long flight, then it’s quite likely that they’ll be tired, so you can say: You must be tired.

And for the past, use must have.
Oh, I can’t find my phone. Ah, I must have left it at the office.

In this scene, Goeffery asks Rose why Miss Minchin won’t let her have Thursday afternoons off anymore and Rose guesses that it’s because somebody saw them together, and she says:
We must have been seen together.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is snobbishness.

Do you know what a snob is?

a person who has an exaggerated respect for high social position or wealth and who looks down on those regarded as socially inferior

Snobbishness is the quality that snobs have.

In today’s scene, Rose says that the nasty headmistress: only lives for that school and her ideas of propriety and snobbishness.

Step 1: Repeat Goeffrey’s lines.
Step 2: Read Goeffrey’s lines and talk to Rose.

Goeffrey Rose. Something's wrong. What is it?

Rose Miss Minchin is taking away my Thursday afternoon.

Goeffrey But why?

Rose We must have been seen together.

Goeffrey Well does that mean I can never see you alone again?

Rose Of course not, darling. No matter what Miss Minchin says, we'll find a way.

Goeffrey What? I can't understand the woman. What is she afraid of? Why shouldn't we see one another?

Rose Gossip, I suppose. She only lives for that school and her ideas of propriety and snobbishness.
