Show 783 Friday 4 July

Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s song is Opposites Attract by Paula Abdul.
This song came out in 1989, so it brings back a lot of memories for me.

I think this song is a great song for studying English because it’s like studying a list of opposites.
The song is about a couple who love each other even though they are very different.

Here are some of the lyrics:

You like the movies
And I like TV

I take things serious
And you take 'em light

I go to bed early
And I party all night

She makes the bed
And he steals the covers

She likes it neat
And he makes a mess

I take it easy
Baby I get obsessed

She's got the money
And he's always broke

I don't like cigarettes
And I like to smoke

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today, the agency in charge of the internet's addresses recently lost track of its own address.

ICANN was born in 1998 and lives in California.
Its tasks include assignment of domain names and IP addresses.
Recently two of the organization’s own domain names were hijacked.
The Associated Press reported that the attack happened when an internet registration company icann oversees got fooled into transferring the domain names to someone else.
They said the attack was quickly noticed, and ICANN's domain names were restored within 20 minutes.

And that was Stick News for Friday 4th July.
Kia Ora.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is broke.

Broke is an informal adjective which means to have completely run out of money.

People also use it to mean that they don’t have much money or they can’t really afford something.
If someone invites you out and you don’t want to go because you don’t have much money, you can say: Sorry, I can’t. I’m broke.

conversations with sarah
#483 What else does she sing?

Step 1: Repeat Kana’s lines.
Step 2: Read Kana’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Sarah I used to love Paula Abdul.

Kana What else does she sing?

Sarah Straight Up, Rush Rush, Promise Of A New Day, Blowing Kisses In The Wind – I used to love those songs. Classic 80s songs ... or maybe early 90s, actually.

Kana Does she still sing?

Sarah I think she mainly does TV presenting these days, but she released a song recently.
