Show 446 Monday 23 July

Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s guest is Ulla. Ulla lives here in Nelson – just up the road actually. We were invited to Ulla’s place a couple of weeks ago for a birthday party and while we were there we talked about food.

Ulla likes raw food and she gives classes about raw food – such as making green smoothies. So we asked her if she would like to be a Sunday Kitchen guest.

And she agreed and today we went up to film that. That is going to be on this Sunday. It was a lot of fun. And sooo delicious ... we got to drink green smoothies and also had fruit leather and cookies. mmm

After we’d finished with the food I sat down for a few minutes and asked Ulla some questions about raw food and moving to Canada and learning English.

Ulla is originally from Germany but she’s been in Canada for more than 30 years. I asked her when she first came to Canada.

I came in 1973, actually, ah, to visit.
I stayed for about 3 months and I travelled around ah, the country and the continent – I went to down to the states as well.
And ah yeah, I just had a great summer, I connected with people. I learnt the language, actually. I hitchhiked for part of the trip that I did and I,I was on the bus as well. So lots of opportunities to talk the language and to meet people.
That’s how I learnt English.

conversations with sarah
#272 Do you go back to Germany often?

Step 1: Repeat Sarah’s lines.
Step 2: Read Sarah’s lines and talk to Ulla.

Sarah When did you become interested in raw food?

Ulla I think it was about 5 years ago. A colleague of mine, a teaching colleague, ah, had cancer, pancreatic cancer. And I remember the ads that I saw in the paper just said that raw food had been, ah, proven to be quite effective to counteract cancer. And, ah, I did a little bit of reading. I started finding books, I started finding other sources. And I started experimenting with raw food and felt the immediate effects. Of just having more energy ... and um, that it tasted really good as well.

Sarah How much of your diet is raw?

Ulla I think right now, being in the summer time and having so much in the garden. It’s probably 90% of my food right now is, is raw. And I still enjoy just a little bit of steamed food. Mostly root vegetables – carrots and beets and um, have that either in a soup or some rice. Slightly steamed. That seems to work well for me.

Sarah Why do you think raw food is good for you?

Ulla I think it’s just the amount of enzymes that, that you get when you don’t cook the food. Just to have the, the ... all of the vitamins everything still intact. And have it fresh. I think that, that makes a difference.

Sarah Do you go back to Germany often?

Ulla Yes, I go again this year in the fall. And, ah, I go back every two years at least to visit my family.

Sarah Is there anything you miss about Germany?

Ulla Um, I used to miss certain foods. Mostly the breads and the wonderful cheeses. But, no, I’ve been in Canada for over 30 years, so I really am comfortable here right now. This is my home.

Sarah What advice do you have for people who are studying English?

Ulla Um, I think just to start talking. And ah, not be afraid of ah, getting the grammar right. Just starting to connect with people. And ah, yeah, and then the language will just come.
Another good way to learn the language is to fall in love with a Canadian. And ah, and then you have the motivation to, to want to communicate in that language.
