Show 454 Tuesday 31 July

Watch today's show at YouTube.

Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.

Yesterday’s guest was Jeff from the tofu shop and on Sunday Kitchen this week you’ll be able to see how they make tofu.

Today I thought I’d tell you the story behind the visit to the tofu factory.
So back in Japan I had the idea of, for Sunday Kitchen, not just cooking stuff myself, but also going to restaurants or food manufacturers and filming how they make stuff.

On Japanese TV there are a lot of shows like this – they go to a bakery or whatever and film what’s going there. So I thought I’d do something like that – although a different style.

And one place I really wanted to visit was a tofu shop in Japan. But I just never got around to it. Then when we came to Nelson, we were eating tofu at our first host place, and I looked at the packet and I noticed that it was made in Nelson. And it also had herbs in it which was interesting – very different to the tofu in Japan.
So then I thought – we should go and visit them and film them. That would be really interesting – especially for Japanese viewers, it would be interesting to see tofu made in Canada.

Then when we came here – we talking to Helen, one of our hosts and she said that she knew him and she’d call him for us. And so she called him and he said sure ... and the rest is history.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today, the Taipei 101 is no longer the tallest building in the world. A building in Dubai is even taller.

Since 2004, the Taipei 101 has been the tallest building in the world. It is 509.2 meters tall.
The same year that building was finished, construction started on an even taller building in Dubai.
The Burj Dubai has an estimated completion date of the 30th of December 2008. The estimated height is 818 meters.
On the 20th of July the building surpassed the height of the Taipei 101 making it the tallest high-rise building in the world.
But it won’t have that official title until it’s finished.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday 31st of July.
Kia Ora.

#277 Is the tofu in Canada the same as in Japan?

Step 1: Repeat Brian’s lines.
Step 2: Read Brian’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Brain Is the tofu in Canada the same as in Japan?

Sarah No, from what I’ve seen, it’s usually different.

Brain How so?

Sarah Well, the stuff here is usually hard, or firm. But in Japan it’s usually soft.

Brain Do they have herb tofu?

Sarah No, not that I’ve seen. But they have other kinds – like goma (sesame), eda mame tofu and ... oh, what I really like is Jonny.

Brain What’s that?

Sarah It’s really soft and creamy and mmm it’s really good. You’ve got to try it.

Show 453 Monday 30 July

Watch today's show at YouTube.

Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s guest is Jeff. Jeff is the owner of a company in Nelson called Silver King Soya Foods. They make tofu.

Last week, Jeff kindly let us come and visit and watch the tofu making process.
And it was really interesting. And we filmed it and that is going to be on this Sunday.

Jeff was pretty busy making the tofu but he agreed to answer a few questions on camera while he worked.

The first thing I asked him was: How long have you been making tofu? And he told me the story of how and why he began.

Well, I got into this by accident, quite literally. I used to be a tree planter.
And, ah, in 1989, ah, we were coming back from California. We had a bad car accident. And after that I couldn’t really plant trees. For a while I couldn’t even walk. A very short while, but, for a while. And then ah, I had already talked with this woman and I we were planning on ... she had ... came to me and said, “Would you like to start a tofu business with me?” And I said, “Tofu? What’s that?”
It was, sort of, really like that. You know. My wife says we’d been eating it all along, but I never even knew. So, um, I said sure. Mostly cause I liked her.
But, ah ... And we went up to see Greg (Craig?) Lund and his wife Ellen (Helen?) were making tofu up in Kaslo. They really started this business.
The accident for us happened on March 1st. And it was just about the time I was getting ready to go tree planting. Um, and I couldn’t do that anymore. And, ah, so, I sat around a lot and, ah, Greg meanwhile moved his tofu factory from up there down to Nelson. Anyway, he moved down here so his kids could go to the Waldorf school. And he moved the tofu shop - he had it in a trailer by that time, he started it out in his basement, but he had it in a, in a trailer. And he moved the trailer down to Nelson, to Silver King road. And renamed it Silver King Soya Foods.
And he was looking for help to wash buckets. And wash up after making it. It was a lot different configuration than this. He was making the tofu, not with a pressure cooker, but just with ah, three camp stoves, with, ah, big pots on top of them. And he wanted someone to wash up for him. So, I figured that was sort of within my limited capabilities then. And I started washing di... washing up in the tofu shop.
And meanwhile Greg was trying to sell the shop because he thought he had post-polio syndrome. And he felt his whole body going numb on him. Um, so he wanted out of the business. And I didn’t want him to sell it because then I’d lose my dishwashing job. Which was about forty dollars a week, fif... sixty dollars a week I think.
So I offered to become partners with him and ah, I joined the business that way. And we were partners for about two or three years. And then he got a real job, up in Kaslo, ah, working in the hospital. So he moved back to Kaslo and sold me the rest of the business. And, ah, I moved it from his place out there - ‘cause I figured sooner or later he was going to sell it – down to this. And at that point this brewery was still ah, very falling down, it was ... holes in the roof and everything. It was really... There was no, no other businesses in here except these guys next door, Trainor Mechanical was the only business in here. And right at the same time I moved in Keith next door that has the Live Metal moved in. So, um, he and I are the oldest tenants downstairs here. Actually there were some people upstairs.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today public nudity has been banned in town called Brattleboro in the United States after officials received several complaints.

Vermont is a state in the north east of United States of America.
According to Reuters, Vermont has a live-and-let-live tradition, allowing skinny-dipping and nude sunbathing.
But one town in Vermont has had enough of the nudity.
Officials in Brattleboro say they received quite a number of complaints about people wearing only their birthday suits in pubic.
So this month they passed an emergency rule. Now, according to Wikipedia, nudity is banned on the main roads and within 250 feet of any school or place of worship.
Skinny-dipping and nude sunbathing is still legal but anyone doing "full monty" in the middle of town could be fined $100.

And that was Stick News for Monday the 30th of July.
Kia Ora.

#276 Did it take long to learn how to make?

Step 1: Repeat Sarah’s lines.
Step 2: Read Sarah’s lines and talk to Jeff.

Sarah Did it take long to learn how to make?

Jeff Not to learn the basics, I mean you already know the basics, right? Just from watching and listening to, ah, what Mitch was saying. But to, to make it good takes a while to learn.

Sarah Do you think the market has changed over the years?

Jeff I don’t know, I’ve found the market pretty steady for the last 17 years or however long I’ve been doing it. We actually make less tofu now than we did 17 years ago.

Sarah Why is that?

Jeff I don’t know. It’s a good thing as far as I’m concerned right now, because, ah, we package it all. We didn’t package any of it to begin with. Packaging takes at least half of the time.
Sarah Do you have to package it for health reasons?

Jeff Well ... the health department made it really hard for the stores that wanted to sell bulk. Like see those bins up there? I had lids, with sliding lids and they had our name on them and everything, I had about 40 of those out at all the stores around here. Including the big supermarkets. Save-On, it was called Overweighty Foods, now it’s Save-On. And they sold it in bulk bins like that. And I would take them lots of tofu in bulk.
But now, they’re all packaged. There’s about two places in town that you can buy it ... actually there’s one place that you can still buy it in bulk, and that’s the co-op.

Sunday Kitchen #57 Green Smoothie

On Monday, we visited Ulla and she made us some green smoothies.
First she picked some fruit and vegetables in the garden.
Then she washed and cut them.
Then put stuff in the blender.
Banana, apple, water, raspberries.
Then she put some chard in.
And some dill.
Some kale, parsley, celery and a weed called lamb’s quarter.
She added a few beets.
Some berries and some ginger.
Then she tasted it and decided to put more raspberries in and some lime.
Some more water.
And some more apple.
And that’s it!
The green smoothies turned out to be brown smoothies.
But they tasted very good.

This is Bailey.
Like most dogs, Bailey likes chasing things like sticks.
I don’t know why – it’s seems pretty pointless to me – but anyway ...
Bailey’s favorite thing to chase is an orange ball.
He also loves going down to the river.
At the river we throw sticks for him.
Bailey likes chasing after small sticks.
And massive sticks.
Wow. Go Bailey!

Show 450 Friday 27 July

Watch today' s show at YouTube.

Today is the 450th show, so it's time for a special show.
After watching citizenstand's videos I thought I'd try a standing video.
I didn't have time to go and search of some truly interesting places to stand.
So I thought I'd just stand around the house.

So this is me standing under the clothes line. I was trying to keep a straight face but it was hard because Bailey was trying to play with me.

This is me in front of the sprinkler rainbow with Bailey's head.

That's better. This is after we locked Bailey in the basement.

Standing in the outhouse.
In the compost.
Under an apple tree.

In the river.

I decided to try standing at night time too.
But you can't really see me.

That's a little bit better.
Maybe it's better to do it inside the house at night time.

This is me standing at the top of the stairs. Woooo that's pretty scary!

And this is me at the bottom of the stairs. It's amazing what a difference the angle makes.

Goodbye!

Show 449 Thursday 26 July

Watch today's show at YouTube.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Thank you to everyone who commented on Tuesday’s show so far – it’s really interesting to see where everyone’s from. I’m going to wait a few more days and then check how many different countries people are watching from.

And today I’m going to talk about numbers. A lot of people have difficulty saying numbers. So I thought I’d give you some examples.

1.6 one point six
2 1/2 two and a half
1/4 a quarter
3/4 three quarters
7/8 seven eighths
400 four hundred

Remember after hundred you say and, but after thousand you don’t.
So it’s:

405 four hundred and five
450 four hundred and fifty
1845 one thousand, eight hundred and forty five
1,234,557 one million, two hundred and thirty four thousand, five hundred and fifty seven

If this number (1945) was a price, it would be, for example, one thousand nine hundred and forty five dollars.
But if it was a year it would be nineteen forty five.

Years are usually pronounced like that:
1945 nineteen forty five
1988 nineteen eighty eight

But an interesting thing happened when we hit 2000. People called it the year 2000. And the years after that were (2001) two thousand and one, (2002) two thousand and two ...
This year is (2007) two thousand and seven. Well that’s how I say it.
But some people also say twenty oh seven. So ... I’m not sure which one is more common.

For phone numbers you say each digit like this: 356 8812 three five six eight eight one two.

Or if was a number like this: 425 6333, you could say, four two five six triple three.

For time, remember the word like hours or minutes, comes at the end:

So it’s:
2 and a half hours
3 and a half weeks
4 and a half minutes

You can’t say 2 hours and a half.

Sarah Yeah, when I was a kid.

Sam What happened?

Sarah It was in 1985 and there was a big flood in the Coromandel – that’s the area where I grew up.

Sam Did water come into your house?

Sarah Yeah, it did. But actually that night I was staying at my friend’s house and their house was destroyed by the flood.

Sam Did you get out of the house OK?

Sarah Yeah, we couldn’t get out the front door so we had to climb out the bathroom window.

Sam Where did you go?

Sarah We went up the hill. They had a barn up the hill so we stayed there.

Sam Did anyone die?

Sarah Yeah, I think one person did. I didn’t know her though. I just read about it in the paper.

Show 448 Wednesday 25 July

Watch today's show at YouTube.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Last Thursday, Show 442, I asked people to send me some emails so I could point out your mistakes and help you improve your English.
And I got a couple of emails – which is great. And please keep sending me those emails too because I’m planning to keep doing this, every Wednesday.

The first email was from Yumi and actually, as she writes:

... this is not exactly an e-mail to ask you to correct my English errors. I just miss the English transcripts of your shows on your site. I used to check out the words I didn't understand, so it was really helpful for my studies.

Well, I’m really glad you found them useful and thanks for writing to tell me. And I’m sorry there has been no transcripts recently. But the good news is – I’m working on it – I’m slowly catching up and I’ve already done a couple of weeks of the old transcripts and the rest will be up soon.

And she also writes:
I'm a third generation Japanese living in Brazil and one really good thing that happened to me when I started watching your videos is that I became more interested in the Japanese culture, something I wasn't really fond of.
Thank you, I'm learning a lot from your excellent work.

Wow, that’s really cool.

Unfortunately for this exercise, Yumi’s email is almost perfect. The only thing I would change is that I would say I became more interested in Japanese culture rather than the Japanese culture.

You just mean Japanese culture in general so you don’t need the.

By the way, if anyone disagrees with any of my corrections – feel fee to tell me in the comments.
The next email is from someone called Lasz.
Is that how you pronounce your name?
This another problem ... it’s really hard to know how to pronounce names.

Anyway, Lasz writes:
I'd like to write a lot more, but the movie I'm watching, holds my attention to strong.

OK, first thing – your to should be too. And I would also change holds to is holding.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today Microsoft has had trouble getting visas for foreign programmers to work for them in the United States. They are now planning to open a development center in Canada which they say will allow them to recruit people affected by immigration issues in the US.

Microsoft Corporation is an American multinational computer technology corporation with 76,000 employees in 102 countries.
Microsoft is now planning to open a development center in Vancouver, Canada.
A Microsoft spokesperson said that one of the attractions of Vancouver was that it was close to its headquarters in Redmond, Washington, and it was not bound by US immigration policies.
The immigration issues aren’t the reason they are building the center. But the spokesperson said: "It does help us address that challenge we have in the United States of hiring very qualified people, many of whom are graduating from schools in the US, but who cannot acquire the necessary documentation to work in the US."

According to cnetnews.com high-tech companies have been pushing hard to get the US government to increase the number of visas they are allotted.
H-1B is a category of visa for skilled workers. Cnet News reported Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates wants unlimited H-1B visas, and a Google executive has credited the company's success to foreigners and called for expanded ability to hire them.

Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Please write a comment on today's video at YouTube! Tell me where you are from - it would be so interesting to see where everyone is from. Thank you : )

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Recently several different people that I’ve met have asked me about who watches The Daily English Show.

I have a bit of an idea from emails and comments I know that there are people watching in the United States, Japan, Germany, Argentina, (the) Philippines.

But it would be nice to have more of an idea. So, I have a request. Can you please go to YouTube – if you’re not already watching this at YouTube – because YouTube is pretty much the only place where people really leave comments. And I’d like you to leave a comment saying where you are from and where you are now – if it’s different than where you’re from. And also if you could tell me what your native language is – that would be interesting too.
Most people who watch The Daily English Show don’t usually leave comments – which is fine – but just this once it would be really interesting to read a lot of comments and just see where everyone is from.

Show 446 Monday 23 July

Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s guest is Ulla. Ulla lives here in Nelson – just up the road actually. We were invited to Ulla’s place a couple of weeks ago for a birthday party and while we were there we talked about food.

Ulla likes raw food and she gives classes about raw food – such as making green smoothies. So we asked her if she would like to be a Sunday Kitchen guest.

And she agreed and today we went up to film that. That is going to be on this Sunday. It was a lot of fun. And sooo delicious ... we got to drink green smoothies and also had fruit leather and cookies. mmm

After we’d finished with the food I sat down for a few minutes and asked Ulla some questions about raw food and moving to Canada and learning English.

Ulla is originally from Germany but she’s been in Canada for more than 30 years. I asked her when she first came to Canada.

I came in 1973, actually, ah, to visit.
I stayed for about 3 months and I travelled around ah, the country and the continent – I went to down to the states as well.
And ah yeah, I just had a great summer, I connected with people. I learnt the language, actually. I hitchhiked for part of the trip that I did and I,I was on the bus as well. So lots of opportunities to talk the language and to meet people.
That’s how I learnt English.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, this is Stick News. Last night was the final of the FIFA U-20 World Cup. Argentina won the football tournament for the sixth time.

The competition started in 1977 and is held every two years.
The 2007 tournament was held in Canada.
Last night in the final, Argentina beat
Czech Republic 2-1.
It’s the sixth time Argentina has won the championship. They also won in 1979, 1995, 1997, 2001 and 2005.

And that was Stick News for Monday the 23rd of July.
Kia Ora.

conversations with sarah
#272 Do you go back to Germany often?

Step 1: Repeat Sarah’s lines.
Step 2: Read Sarah’s lines and talk to Ulla.

Sarah When did you become interested in raw food?

Ulla I think it was about 5 years ago. A colleague of mine, a teaching colleague, ah, had cancer, pancreatic cancer. And I remember the ads that I saw in the paper just said that raw food had been, ah, proven to be quite effective to counteract cancer. And, ah, I did a little bit of reading. I started finding books, I started finding other sources. And I started experimenting with raw food and felt the immediate effects. Of just having more energy ... and um, that it tasted really good as well.

Sarah How much of your diet is raw?

Ulla I think right now, being in the summer time and having so much in the garden. It’s probably 90% of my food right now is, is raw. And I still enjoy just a little bit of steamed food. Mostly root vegetables – carrots and beets and um, have that either in a soup or some rice. Slightly steamed. That seems to work well for me.

Sarah Why do you think raw food is good for you?

Ulla I think it’s just the amount of enzymes that, that you get when you don’t cook the food. Just to have the, the ... all of the vitamins everything still intact. And have it fresh. I think that, that makes a difference.

Sarah Do you go back to Germany often?

Ulla Yes, I go again this year in the fall. And, ah, I go back every two years at least to visit my family.

Sarah Is there anything you miss about Germany?

Ulla Um, I used to miss certain foods. Mostly the breads and the wonderful cheeses. But, no, I’ve been in Canada for over 30 years, so I really am comfortable here right now. This is my home.

Sarah What advice do you have for people who are studying English?

Ulla Um, I think just to start talking. And ah, not be afraid of ah, getting the grammar right. Just starting to connect with people. And ah, yeah, and then the language will just come.
Another good way to learn the language is to fall in love with a Canadian. And ah, and then you have the motivation to, to want to communicate in that language.

Watch today's show at YouTube.

Sunday Kitchen #56 Bread machine bread

If you have a bread machine, making bread is very easy.
This is one of the great things about WWOOFing – you get to play with all the different machines people have in their kitchens.

I found a simple recipe on the net for bread machine bread.

3 cups all purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
2 1/4 tsp yeast
1 1/2 cups hot water

Press start.

And wait for about 4 hours.

Mmm delicious, fresh bread. Yum.

#444 How To Feed Hummingbirds

Watch today's show at YouTube.

How to feed a hummingbird

First take down the empty hummingbird feeder.
Then unscrew the bottom part.
And take the top part off if you like. You probably don’t really need to do this – but I did.
Then rinse the glass with hot water.
Put half a cup of sugar into a measuring cup.
Fill the jar up with hot water to here.
Pour the hot water into the measuring cup and mix.
Pour the sugar and water into the jar.
Then fill it to the top with cold water.
Screw the red parts back on.
Carry the feeder outside upside down.
Turn it up the right way.
And make sure the steps are lined up with the flowers.
Hang it up.
And wait for hummingbirds.

Show 443 Friday 20 July

Watch today's show at YouTube.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

As you may know, you can watch The Daily English Show on several sites.
The first site that I started uploading to was Grouper.com and then about a week after The Daily English Show started I found YouTube and then started uploading to there as well. And then after that some Japanese sites.

Anyway, since the beginning I’ve continued to upload to both Grouper and YouTube even though the quality of the videos on Grouper isn’t that good.

And then the other day I went to upload to Grouper and I noticed the site was down for maintenance. And I think it was down for a couple of days or for a while anyway … because I kept checking back and it was still down.

And then one time I checked back and ... it’s changed completely. I was shocked. Grouper is no longer grouper – it’s now called Crackle.

But it’s quite cool – the new design is nice, I think it looks better and they’ve added some new things like awards and you can also subscribe to channels like on YouTube. So you should go and check it out. See what you think.

Abject is a formal adjective meaning “extremely unpleasant and degrading”.
A slum is “an area of a city that is very poor and where the houses are dirty and in bad condition”.
Today Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper visited a slum in Haiti. He went there to visit a Canadian-funded hospital.
The Vancouver Sun reported Haiti is the second largest recipient of Canadian foreign aid after Afghanistan.
They quoted Stephen Harper saying:
"I think all of us, as fellow human beings, as people who have our own families, can only begin to understand the true difficulties and the challenges that so many people in this country face on a day-to-day basis."

And that was Stick News for Friday the 20th of July.

Sarah No, I think you have to be invited. It’s just for a few of the people that have a lot of subscribers.

Bob Do you think it’s a good idea?

Sarah Yeah, I guess so. I don’t know what their contracts look like though, so I’m not sure.

Show 442 Thursday 19 July

Watch today's show at YouTube.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

One very good way to improve your English is to make mistakes and then learn from them.

So I have an idea. If you would like me to correct your English – please send me an email. And in the subject line write: Error Correction Email.
And send it to thedailyenglishshow at gmail dot com
Then write an email about anything – or you can send me a piece of writing that you’ve used somewhere else and you want checked ... and then I’ll read it and pick up one or two mistakes and talk about them on the show.

Sorry – I’m not going to correct or rewrite the whole thing for you – so don’t like send me your entire essay for school and ask me to correct it, I won’t do that – I’ll just be picking out one or two mistakes.
I think this will be really useful for – obviously for the person who wrote the email – but also for everybody else ... because many other people probably make the same mistake as you and they can learn from your mistake.

So please start sending me your emails. And they can be about whatever you like – just write and tell me about what you did today or what you had for lunch or anything.

Show 441 Wednesday 18 July

Watch today's show at YouTube.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

I thought I’d tell you about a common mistake today. The use of midnight.
A lot of my students in Japan make the mistake of saying “at midnight” when they mean “in the middle of the night”.

At midnight means at exactly 12 o’clock. For example, the TV program starts at midnight.

Not that many things happen at exactly midnight so you’re more likely to want to use things like:

around midnight
about midnight
before midnight
after midnight

If something happens at, say, 3am, like the phone rings. You can’t say “the phone rang at midnight”. But you can say “the phone rang in the middle of the night”.

In the middle of the night doesn’t mean exactly the middle of the night – it just means during the time that people are usually asleep.

Other useful things you can say are at night, during the night, really early in the morning.

And speaking of in the middle of the night. There is a famous rhyme with that line in it. And there is something strange about this rhyme – see if you can figure out what it is.

One fine day in the middle of the night
Two dead men got up to fight
Back to back they faced each other
Drew their swords and shot each other

#269 Is it the first time you’ve been IDed in Canada?

Step 1: Repeat Kris's lines.
Step 2: Read Kris's lines and talk to Sarah.

Sarah Someone asked me for ID the other day.

Kris Where?

Sarah At a bar in Nelson. There was this place with tables outside and it was in the afternoon and we felt like sitting down and having a beer.

Kris And they asked you for ID?

Sarah Yeah, I was so surprised.

Kris Why? Is that the first time you’ve been IDed in Canada?

Sarah Yeah. I just wasn’t expecting it, I guess. In Japan, I’ve never been asked for ID for buying alcohol. Only by random police officers in the street.

Kris So what happened? Did you show them?

Sarah No, I don’t usually carry my passport around so I just said, I don’t have any and then she said, oh well, never mind ... which kind of defeats the purpose of asking for it in the first place.

Kris What is the drinking age in Canada?

Sarah Yeah, I didn’t even think about it until that happened ... but it’s, 19.

Kris 19? Oh yeah.

Sarah Yeah, weird aye. It’s usually 18 or 20. I wonder how they came up with that number.

Show 440 Tuesday 17 July

Watch today's show at YouTube.

Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.
Yesterday’s guest was a musician, Kris LeDrew from the Nelson band Funk Republic.
And today I thought I’d tell you the story of how I came to be interviewing him.
So, on Saturday we’d gone into Nelson to check out the markets and to see if we might find someone that we could interview for The Daily English Show – because I’m always looking for guests for the Monday show.
But the market didn’t turn out to be that interesting, and there was no one that I really felt like asking to interview. So we just walked around town for a bit and then we ran into Harry and his friend who Harry had said might be good to interview. But I asked him and he said that he was camera shy and he didn’t want to do it.
So I just gave up on finding someone to interview that day and we went to hitchhike home. And when we got to the hitching point, as soon as we got there, we stuck out our thumbs and the first car that was going past stopped.
And we got in the car and started talking. And the woman was really cool and friendly and she started telling us she’d just picked up some posters for a band and that there was band practice happening at her house at the moment.
And I said: are you in the band? And she said: no, I’m just kind of their manager. And I was like: oh ... do think I could interview them? And she was like: yeah, sure, I could take you there now.
So we went to her house and we watched them practice and I interviewed Kris and ... It was great. Her house was fantastic – perfect place for bands they even had a stage outside ... it was very cool.

Police have only one suspect, 28-year old Tatsuya Ichihashi. But they can’t find him.

They hope that many people will buy and wear the t-shirt and it will help to find the suspect.
However, according to Wikipedia there are growing fears that Ichihashi may have already committed suicide.

Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.
Today’s guest is Kris LeDrew. He is a musician. And how I met him is an interesting story which I think I’ll tell you tomorrow.
Kris plays in a band called Funk Republic.
They are playing at a festival called Starbelly Jam this weekend so they’ve been practicing for that. And I got to listen to some of their practice the other day – which was awesome.
And I also got to interview Kris.
The first thing I asked him was: how long have you guys been together?
:36
Ah, let me see ... the band has been probably together ... Brent, how long has the band been together. (Eight months.) Eight months, exactly.

And what brought you together?

:46
Well actually, um, ah, a friend was having a, a, um, end of her business, she was closing down The Night Train. And we jammed together and ah, we were trying to throw together a, a gig. And we just had a meeting, at Oso Negro and there was a bunch of us that came together and we just said let’s ah, let’s start a band. And then we came up, the name just came together, Funk Republic. And ah, and we’ve been playing um, you know, off and on around in the area for, for the last, you know, eight months or so.

Sunday Kitchen #53 How to make soymilk

To make soymilk, first you need to soak soybeans overnight.
Then put some beans in a blender.
Put enough water into the blender to cover the beans.
Blend.
Hmm, maybe if needs a bit more water.
When it's blended enough, pour it into a big pot.
Repeat until all the beans are blended.
Then cook the beans in the big pot.
Bring it to the boil, and then cook it for about twenty minutes.
As it's cooking, scrape off the foam.
When it's finished cooking, put some cheese cloth over a pot and pour the beans through the cloth.
Hmm, two clips don't seem to be enough. Oops. That's better.
Take the clips off.
Squeeze out all the soymilk.
This stuff is called okara put it into a container so you can use it later.
Pour the milk into jars.
You might want to use a funnel.
Leave it to cool down, and then put it in the fridge.
